Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain calls made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
