Space Traveler Discloses Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
The group of women also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
